About
An Education in Craftsmanship
North Bennet Street School has been training people for employment since 1885. It pioneered the concept of intensive instruction in a classroom/shop setting for the sole purpose of learning a trade. All of our courses prepare graduates for work in fields that require craftsmanship: skillful use of hand tools and power equipment; informed choice of appropriate materials; knowledgable and creative problem-solving grounded in awareness of the best solutions of the craft over many years; and a commitment to the highest quality of work.
North Bennet Street School has a distinct reputation for excellence. It is more than a school where students learn the comprehensive elements of their chosen field; it is a place that sustains tradition in craftsmanship. Students come to North Bennet Street School from all corners of the globe to enroll in our programs. As diverse as the offerings are, they are tied together by the simple fact that in each program, students learn the time-honored skills and methods that produce work of the highest standards.
North Bennet Street School classes are small with a student teacher ratio of 12:1 where you will work closely with instructors and other students. We encourage you to visit, look at our facilities and even talk to current students. Contact the Admissions Office in advance and we will make arrangements for your visit.
Facilities
North Bennet Street School operates in an early 19th century brick building that was once a church and then a sailor's retirement home. A main building and three attached smaller buildings comprise the school's main facility. The 45 rooms in the main facility that house workshops and classrooms provide the space, equipment and machinery necessary for proper instruction in the various fields of training offered at the school. Support services also located in the school's main facility include Admissions, Academic and Student Services, Business and Administrative Offices. The school is easily identified at its location on the corner of Salem and North Bennet Streets by a large 19th century clock mounted over the North Bennet Street School sign. A secondary location of 10,000 square feet at 60 Lowell Street, Arlington, MA - 9 miles from Boston - houses the Carpentry and Preservation Carpentry programs. Both facilities are accessible by wheelchair.
Mission Statement
