It has many variations and lends itself to individual tastes, making wonderful use of papers of different colors and patterns in the woven structure of the binding. Colorful threads can also be used to enhance these bindings as the sewing is left exposed. This class works well for those who have taken the Introduction to Non-Adhesive Bookbinding workshop, but previous bookbinding experience is not required.

 Vellum Stiffboard Binding
 Mon-Wed, Aug 18-20, 2008, 8:30am-4:30pm
 James Reid-Cunningham, Instructor
 $550
Vellum stiffboard bindings were common from the 16th to the 19th centuries throughout Europe, and often functioned as an alternative to more expensive leather bindings. This course will explore a hybrid modern structure utilizing historical elements found in early versions of the vellum stiffboard binding, but with flexible joints that create less stress on fragile text blocks. This binding is sturdy and elegant, takes gold tooling well, and is suitable for conservation re-bindings as well as for presentation bindings or fine bindings. During this course, the student will learn herringbone sewing on split thongs; back bead endbands; fabricating bookboard; constructing a vellum stiffboard case; lacing on the case using endband cores and thongs; tipped-on endsheets; and tooling the spine with gold leaf. The tuition includes a materials fee for supplies.

“I love the evolutionary transformation - through hammering, persuasion, and strugglefrom a flat sheet of metal towards an object of unity and fluidity. I enjoy the paradox that “soft” and fluid-looking metal may have required extreme force and skill to be produced. The forms in my work have their roots in my gardens, and meanderings through the woods and along the water’s edge. The allusions are ambiguous so that each viewer may relate differently, as perceptions are filtered through personal sets of memories and experiences. Each piece is intended to be used, worn, or held and contemplated for a moment’s respite from the hectic world.” From Cynthia Eid's artist statement.  Janet Collins, Instructor
 $6000
This Furniture Making Intensive should be considered by those who wish to learn as much as possible about furniture making in a three month time period. Participation in this longer term class can also be used by students who wish to enhance their skills to be better prepared to attend one of North Bennet Street School’s full time programs. This course is designed to guide the student from basic hand and machine skills to advanced techniques in furniture making with each student building a writing desk from rough lumber. This course includes the foundational content of two of our workshops, Fundamentals of Fine Woodworking and Fundamentals of Machine Woodworking. The first part of this class will include the hand and machine skills presented in those two classes. Students will complete several basic and advanced joinery samples and other projects, prior to building a Sheraton style desk. The construction of this desk will cover many techniques that can be used in building a wide range of furniture. Building this desk from conception to completion will provide students with the knowledge and skills to build most tables and case pieces. Students will be brought to the lumber yard and guided through the process of choosing and purchasing the appropriate stock for the project. Students will be given instruction and practice three styles of legs, including turned and tapered legs. Students will have the choice of which style of leg they will make for their desk. In addition, the skills learned in this course will include: basic drafting, reading and following furniture plans, project organization, developing procedures and stock lists, working safely, efficiently and accurately, spindle and faceplate turning, veneering curved and flat surfaces, case and table construction, and finishing. The hand cut and machine cut joinery will include: half blind and through dovetails, mortise and tenon, multiple stub tenons, twin tenons, housed tapered dovetails, dovetailed drawer dividers, dovetailed vertical partitions, shaping and cutting molding, and curved and flat drawer construction. Upon completion, students will have met our Fundamentals of Fine Woodworking and Fundamentals of Machine Woodworking prerequisites. This course has no prerequisite. Students will be responsible for the materials cost of approximately $300. for the writing desk. If you don’t already own woodworking tools, expect to spend approximately $550. on tools for this course, in addition to tuition. You will receive a tool list in the mail the month before your class is scheduled to begin. For your convenience, you will also receive an order form if you wish to order tools, which can be picked up prior to or on the day of your class, from our school store.

 Introduction to Bowl Turning
 3 weeks, Saturdays, Dec 6-20, 2008, 8:30am-4:30pm
 Rich Friberg, Instructor
 $500
This three day course introduces students to faceplate and bowl turning, which can be very different from spindle turning. Various methods of attaching the wood will be covered in this class, as will sharpening the appropriate tools for bowl turning. Projects to work on include small bowls and plates. More objects can be turned depending upon the skill level of the students. Each student will have a lathe to use during the entire class. This class is open to all skill levels. The school has sets of tools students may use during this class. If you wish to buy your own turning tools, expect to spend approximately $160 on tools for this course, in addition to tuition.
